John was a former neighbor and while we didn't know him well, he was always cordial and pleasant to talk to. He made his mark on the community and will be missed. One of the "good guys". Sorry about his passing.

I knew John only through Facebook. It's an oddly one-dimensional way of "knowing" someone, but I found him to be smart & always with an outlook of inquiry & interested in understanding where others were coming from. Even while he was in the hospital, he continued to be engaged. I guess that's what made his last couple of posts really shocking, because he didn't seem that sick to those of out in internet-land. To me this highlights the idea of "living till you die"--the idea that we should all remain truly engaged in life until we can't any longer. In that, we should strive to be like John. Blessings to his loved ones & those who had the opportunity to know him in person.
